Pieter currently works a s senior researcher aquatic ecology at the Provincial Centre of Environmental Research (Belgium). He is responsible for the follow-up of the ecological and chemical water quality of lotic en lentic aquatic ecosystems in Flanders. He is also responsible for the development of water management plans to reach the aims as set by the European Water framework Directive. He supports decision-making on the reintroduction of aquatic species and restoration programs of rare and endangered fish species in Flanders together with the Agency for Nature and Forest. He is also affiliated to the Department of Animal Sciences and Aquatic Ecology of Ghent University where he supports ongoing projects related to impact assessment of wetlands in developing countries. His main focus lies on wetland dependent birds such as Wattled Crane and Saddle Billed Stork.
